Compatability and system requirements:
There are two versions of the Trojan® Screen Saver for the Macintosh. One version is designed for the Standard Mac which uses either a 68030 or 68040 processor chip. This includes the Mac II and Quadra systems, as well as many of the home Performer series. If you are using this version, you will find that it will also run under Apple Computer's "emulation" mode in the newer Power PC line of computers, although it may not do so optimally.
To enhance the performance of use on Power PC units, we have also created a Native PPC version. This version will be able to run without the use of the emulation code and hence will run with fewer conflicts or interferences with other software. This version is packaged separately and has "PowerPC" in the panel's About box. It will NOT run on standard non PPC Mac computers.
Both Versions require a color Macintosh computer running at least System 7.0 or higher (7.1.2 for PPC version). They should have no problems running on any monitor 13 inches or larger.
Screen savers are graphics intensive. This one has both full animation action and an audio track that take up memory. Make sure to have a minimum of 2.5 free megs for the screen saver to run in, although 4 megs are preferred. This means your Mac needs at least 8 megs of ram.
Installing your Trojan® Screen Saver for the Mac
You will find your new screen saver for the Apple Macintosh line of computers very easy to install and use. It is designed to be a single file Control Panel Device and goes in the Control Panel folder inside your System Folder on your main hard drive.
There are two simple methods to install. One is a very simple two step operation, the other is a slightly more advanced one step. Make sure to turn off any virus software before installing.
METHOD ONE (the two step):
1. Double-click the "Trojan Screen Saver.sea" file and when a dialog box comes up asking where to place the screen saver, choose the top of your hard drive directory (where your System Folder is). Click on the "Extract" button.
2. Go to your hard drive and locate the screen saver. Click on it and drag it on top of your System Folder's icon. The folder will turn dark indicating it is selected. Release the mouse button. A dialog box will offer to put the file inside the Control Panel folder. Say okay.
RESTART YOUR COMPUTER AND IT IS INSTALLED.
METHOD TWO (the one step):
1. Double-click the "Trojan Screen Saver.sea" file and when a dialog box comes up asking where to place the screen saver, choose to put the file directly into your Control Panel folder. This will be something like "HD name>System Folder>Control Panel>". Click on the "Extract" button and it will do its thing.
(If for some reason you install it into the wrong folder, then you can always find it and proceed with step #2 in method one)
RESTART YOUR COMPUTER AND IT IS INSTALLED.
Using Your Trojan® Screen Saver
The screen saver is now installed and should run automatically. If you go to the Control Panel folder (or the Apple Menu) and open the screen saver, you will be presented with a number of additional options you can use to customize the use of it.
ON AND OFF: This allows you to turn the software off even if it has loaded into the computer upon start-up. It can then be turned back on when needed.
ACTIVE AFTER... : This allows you to control how many minutes of inactivity with the computer must pass before the screen saver will automatically engage. Any mouse movements or keypresses are considered activity and will restart the count from time zero.
Note that it is not recommended that too low a number be put in this box since a screen saver is not meant to engage too soon since it could interfere with your general usage of the computer.
SLEEP NOW CORNER: If you are about to walk away from your computer and wish to engage the screen saver immediately (say for screen privacy), you can simply slide your mouse pointer to the selected corner of the screen (upper right is the default) and let go. The screen saver will engage in about three seconds. Make sure to put the pointer way into the corner. No clicking of any kind is needed, nor do you need the control panel to be open. Note that you can change the corner selection if desired.
SOUND
There is a soundtrack that runs when the saver is engaged. It is a natural wind sound that is very pleasant in the background. It is not meant to be too loud or too soft. You may wish to adjust your computer's output volume in the SOUNDS control panel.
TROUBLE SHOOTING
Confirm the screen saver is not running correctly by placing your mouse in the sleep corner and waiting a few seconds. If it activates after a few moments then it is functioning properly. You may wish to lower the "Activate after..." number in the control panel.
In the event that you have trouble running your screen saver, take these steps:
1. Make sure you have installed the software correctly in the control panel folder inside your system folder on your hard drive. If not, put it there now.
2. Make sure that it was turned on in its control window (as seen above).
3. Make sure that the "Extensions Manager" software has not deactivated it. See your computer manual for instructions on this software's use.
5. Restart your computer.
6. Make sure you have enough ram available for it to run in.
7. Try dumping the saver in the Trash and doing a re-installation with all virus software turned off. Do not turn virus detection on again until the screen saver is working properly.
Also check that you are not using a Power PC version on a standard Mac. It will not run.
If you have done all of the above and still have problems, try turning off all other extensions and running with just the Trojan Screen Saver loaded. Although it is impossible to test every configuration under the sun, this software has been tested on many units and is proven to run.
FLYING TROJAN WORD
If instead of seeing the animation you get a small picture of the word TROJAN jumping about your screen, then you either do not have enough memory and can try to Quit a program or two, or you have the Trojan control panel window open-just close it.
